The Press Photographers Association of Ireland is delighted to announce that its ‘Press Photographer of the Year’ 2019 exhibition has opened in the DLR Lexicon, Dun Laoghaire and will be available for visitors to view until Wednesday, 31st July 2019. The exhibition was officially opened by Cathaoireach of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Cllr. Shay Brennan, on Wednesday, 3rd July 2019.
The 2019 exhibition features 101 prints and chronicles the year 2018 covering all the highs and lows including the many sporting events both at home and abroad, the momentous Papal Visit as well as the catastrophic weather events including the infamous ‘Beast from the East’.
The overall award of ‘Press Photographer of the Year’ 2019 was presented to Tom Honan, a freelance photographer from Dublin at the awards ceremony earlier this year. Tom started his career with Inpho Photography before moving on to work for a time with The Irish Mail on Sunday. He is no stranger to the PPAI Awards stage having received 9 awards to date in previous years. His winning portfolio this year features work commissioned by The Irish Times.
Local freelance photographer, Michael Chester, was awarded 1st prize in the Sports Feature category for his photograph, ‘Shower Power’ which is one of three of Michael’s photographs featuring in this year’s exhibition.
Speaking at the exhibition opening in the DLR Lexicon, Crispin Rodwell, President, Press Photographers Association of Ireland, said, “We are delighted that the Press Photographer of the Year exhibition will once again be showcased in the DLR Lexicon and I would like to thank Marian Keyes for her continued support. I am also delighted to welcome one of our Corporate supporters, Permanent TSB, to the exhibition opening this evening. We hope that visitors over the coming month will enjoy viewing the award-winning and highly commended imagery from our Irish press photographers from across the country.”
